Four letters on a small stone

on

Have you noticed how the harder you try to run
away from something that is real, and
important, and yes something
precious even…
the harder you try to shut it down,
the faster it catches up with you and
the more precise it becomes
in finding you in that fraction of a fraction of a moment when
you forget that you are running still or that
you are shutting anything down.

Have you noticed how when you bolt the doors
it finds the windows to open and when
you shut the windows, it finds
some hidden crack in the very walls of the prison that
protects you, and
it comes, it comes like wisps of smoke,
like the perfume of bold citrus blossoms in spring
it comes at night, and
in the afternoon, and
in the morning swiftly crossing through
the maze of your many veils and forgettings.

And then have you noticed how
when it catches up with you, the steel you wrapped
around those things that are not
things, but your heart and soul
is not steel, and right there, on the spot,
it reminds those things that
are not things about how they are
inexplicably and impossibly
alive, and
reminds them to be, as is their nature, impertinent and
insistent in their aliveness,
reminds them about the many songs
lining the mantle of scars they wear
and would shed,
in the blink of an eye, without thought, regret or
the need for an explanation
so that only the songs would remain…
if only,
if only.

Brace yourself for you can not run, and
you can not stand still,
for the escape and surrender are
the same, because
what catches up with you is what it is
and can only be that, even if the only name
you would allow it
finds itself in four letters
carved into a small stone,
a random amulet that is not random but precise and
so vast,
so very very unfathomable
in the reality and beauty
that it carries.
